Poetry Friday with Kashi

She's had one of those weeks again. She asked me, could I, would I, and of course I said yes. Yes, I'd be happy to. Yes, I'll certainly take care of Poetry Friday.

No problem

Salmon for supper will be fine. No complaints here. Lose the lemon, and I'm good.

So, happy Poetry Friday to you all. I pawed through Toby's copy of Billy Collins's Poetry 180 anthology and found this amusing poem. It's even been set to music.

Alley Cat Love Song

by Dana Gioia

Come into the garden, Fred,
For the neighborhood tabby is gone.
Come into the garden, Fred.
I have nothing but my flea collar on,
And the scent of catnip has gone to my head.
I'll wait by the screen door till dawn.

The fireflies court in the sweetgum tree.
The nightjar calls from the pine,
And she seems to say in her rhapsody,
"Oh, mustard-brown Fred, be mine!"

Read the rest of it here.

And you can catch more Poetry Friday over at The Small Nouns. Thanks, Ben, for hosting.
Yes, I know. She's lucky to have me.

Kashi, You're the purrfect host! I have several volumes of Billy Collins, but this poem is new to me. Thanks for sharing. And, Kashi, one more thing--YOU are lucky to have Toby! Nice pic of you on the cushion! Meow!

Clara, purrrrrrr. I agree that Toby is very good to have on staff. But let's just keep that between us, okay? I don't want it to go to her head. Love, Kashi

Our rescue cat, Willie Morris, would like to get a word in edgewise here and say that all that alley cat stuff is WAY overrated! He's just fine, thank you, with the indoor life (which, Kashi, does include the occasional salmon without lemon in his house, too!).

What a great poem! Well done, Kashi. I think Toby would be willing to let you fill in fairly often. :)

I was a stray, too, Willie Morris, and I remember the days years ago when I waited for handouts, and slept in the cold, and was bullied by bigger cats...I, too, like the indoors. But the romance of it -- the romance of it! The alley cat life - Mehitabel - remember her? Larger than life, and she's still my hero. xo Kashi

Alison, I've about given up getting my own column here. Ain't gonna happen anytime soon. But, I do think I have a gift in the poetry department, and if I can sneak in once in a while and do a PF post, that will suffice. Love, Kashi
